It was one of the nicest days we’d seen so far on the trip. It was at least 90 degrees outside in downtown Rio and there were no clouds in the sky for as far as you could see. My parents and I were walking down the beach when it happened. From behind us we hear tires screech followed by a sharp cry for help.

Spinning around, I instantly see someone fall to the ground on what looked to be a bike, and a taxi going no less than 30 could be seen careening over him. Without hesitation, the cab driver clears the biker, disregarding the fact that he may have just killed the guy, and speeds off down the road in the opposite direction.

Within seconds of the cab driver speeding off, there was a crowd of people around the guy, with more than a few of them on phones presumably calling the authorities.

While we didn’t personally stick around to see the outcome, we did hear later that the biker managed to survive with only 2 broken legs. While it’s a miracle he survived, as far as we know the cab driver was never found; so if you happen to find yourself biking in the city, please be sure to look both ways.
