His spirit is still attached to his body so he’s not dead nor alive at that moment.
He met a woman who had the same curse as him and was taught how to control it.
After a few years she is killed and Nick solves the case but he is not satisfied but that case made the police interested in him and wanted him to become a detective so he attempts to find a place in the world and find the truth.
He dreams of being close to the rift, almost sucked in, almost dead but he is woken up by this strange person who’s features can’t be seen.
The realization that he is not invincible to the effects of the rift, he doesn’t want to be a detective but he solves cases because it helps him find a place in life, something he lost when he was a child.
He wakes up during a case like he was day dreaming and wants to solve the case to prove to himself that he belongs there but he soon finds out that his friends who wander the edge of the rift cannot help him so he is no longer attached to being a detective, he can no longer be of any use.
After pretending that he’s working on it to the police officer and realized that he doesn’t have anywhere else to go so he tried to go see his parents after being gone for seven years.
His parents bring up memories about that day and the homeless person so he asked his friends that wander the rift about this. His parents still think he’s crazy but they are glad to see him.
Nick searches for this person and oddly enough finds what he was supposedly stabbed with under a bunch of news papers in the alley like it was purposely put there not too long ago.
He asks the police officers for a favor pretending it’s for the case, Nick’s old friend may or may not give him trouble but he gets what he wants, information on who this person was.
Nick finds the person, an old woman in a condemned house, with help from his friends, and finds the truth about why this happened.
This woman tell him that she did it out of selfishness, to distract the figures(the creatures wandering the rift) from her so she could die without being devoured.
She is in a similar situation, dead but attached to her body but her body is tired and will give out soon. She was hoping that Nick would distract them so she stabbed him with a knife covered in her blood.
Nick could see them all surrounding her, she wasn’t just a homeless person but a killer as well, someone uses the curse to kill.
Nick is angry, he has a chance to take revenge for the person who caused his distress yet instead he agrees to help her, he felt bad.
He distracts the figures but at a cost, he needs to kill them or kill someone else.
After the battle rages on between him and the figures he could feel himself slowly being dragged towards the rift and more and more of them gather around him.
Flashback to his dream about being too close to the rift and it hits him, the reason why the case was impossible to solve.
The woman is gone so no one else could of done it
