- Designing Principle: Whats most important to the main character and what the readers should discover is that Kevin’s life is the most important factor in this entire mess. Tom realizes he is an adult and has lead a life full of excitement, his son however is still a child and has never had the opportunity to experience life in any way as he his so young. Nothing is more important to Tom then getting his son out alive, even if that means he will lose his own life.
- Best Character: Tom is clearly the best character and hero of the story, putting everything on the line for his son, using every small bit of knowledge he had possibly learned in his experiences to keep him and his son alive.
- Basic Action: Putting his son first, whenever it is possible for Tom to find a bit of relief or help, whether it be food or water for example, putting himself second at all times is the best action seen.
- Character Change: Tom’s weaknesses come out when he sees his son losing strength making it harder for him to hold on.
- Moral Choice: Leaving his son Kevin behind in order to go get help, with Kevin’s physical health not nearly well enough for him to trek through deep snow and blizzard conditions, Tom must make the decisions.
