The sun slowly began to rise over the horizon as the morning began to set in. There is always that initial terrible feeling one gets when you party the night away until mother nature bring back the light and ends the party. It was nearly 6:30 AM at this point and it began to get quite bright outside as my friends and I headed back for our hostel in the city of Marrakech, Morocco.
Our journey in Marrakech had began earlier on the previous Thursday. We had arrived eager to take in the vastly different culture as well as party Moroccan style for the next few days. We had been warned to keep alert in Morocco as it was not part of Europe and the culture was very different. As we continued our aimless walking journey back to the hostel our hunger began to lead us to a choice of restaurants in the area. Being that is was very warm out we took advantageĀ of the weather and sat outside at a local cafe ready to inhale and food and beverages put in front of us. We were given strange dishes with a strange food that had the consistency of cooked potatoes, we ate every bit nonetheless. After our relieving meal we were approached by a street magician offering to show us a number of tricks for a small tip. Unfortunately one of my dumber friends spoke to quickly and before we knew it we were being shown card tricks left and right. With our minds kind of out of it from the previous night of partying one could say we were not giving all of our attention to the street magician. Our friend payed him a rather generous tip and the man bowed and was on his way down the street, at a rather quick pace.
We got up from the table and headed down the street, not thirty feet down the road my heart sank in my chest as I felt the emptiness of my front and back pockets containing my expensive Iphone, and my wallet, containing everything that keep us safe in Morocco. Within minutes all 4 of my other friends realized they items were also missing. In a matter of minutes this street magician had used misdirection to keep us looking at his hands, while his team robbed and left us empty handed in Morocco. With almost no money, no ID’s and no idea of direction we wandered the streets of Marrakech worried about what the next move was to make….
