30.1.14 : Story Proposal- sample

Out of the different kinds of stories that the Cookbook lists: mine is defiantly a hybrid of two. Character/Adventure/Recovery/Discovery– it’s an epic tale of all of these things, when our being are rocked to our core! Insert dramatic music and lighting! Alright, not quite like that. The kind of story I want it to be doesn’t follow the normal plot curve, you know that one that people learn to follow in 5th grade. I don’t know exactly what kind of shape it’s going to end up in and that’s perfectly ok. Writing fiction is not something you can always plan.

So rather than write a scene here – I’m going to use this as a quick brainstorming session if that’s alright. In the last post I made, I actually posted a scene from my story- and introduced the idea of partners. It’s a very common concept, you see it in many movies, shows, and books. The unlikely duo, the pair that hooks up and falls in love, there are dozens of tropes on this subject and many times partners are chosen on a personal need level, or on a practical level. Partners in the world I’m introducing work a bit differently, as the military aspect of this world is built on the idea of partners.
A pair is compromised of two individuals: one who is of offensive training and the other that is from defensive training two, what will be, very unique disciplines. They are paired based on skill as well as personality, most often a stronger defender will be placed with a weaker attacker until such a time that the attacker is either ready to move to the field with their partner or move to a different partner to further excel their skill. This places a good deal of leadership on the defender of the pair- but in return the offensive partner teachers the other versatility and flexibly. These parings form the bulk of the military, the soldiers and lower ranked officers.
Knights and Officials however are paired solely based on skill- as they need to be the strongest pairs. These pairs are chosen by the King or Queen (dependent on who is currently holding power) and are permanent  only able to be changed should one of the knights die. Considering the structure  of the military as a whole, it is very rare that these upper echelon pairings do not work out well- and in some cases they even end up in marriage.  In this fashion, the military is commanded not by the King or Queen, but by the “top” pair { ranking scheme still to come }. This keeps on person from controlling the entire military and also keeps both sides well represented.

I really want the political atmosphere to be partnered with the idea of a military, but not dominated or controlled. It acts as a support system for the regent and rather being loyal to the position of the regent, they are loyal to the person once that loyalty is earned.

It’s a little vague at the moment, but until I get the general world atmosphere and ranking/class system in place it will continue to be a tad vague.

  1. The pairing idea sounds intriguing as a form of governance; i hope it is useful I’m more than just military situations, as life has so much more–even during wartime.
I still would like to see a scne where this pairing is at play–maybe a tense scene where an unexpected pairing is made that seems a bad choice but ends up surprisingly good, or vice versa–i really didn’t believe the top pair got all the other pairings right. that’s why Romeo & Juliet is a common story
