Scene 1:

Doc:

We were on our w-w-way home from working in the mines, when I noticed that lights were on in our h-house.  The other dwarves and I tip-tip-toe-tip-toed to the door as to not alert the intruder that we came back.  As we got closer I-I-I-I noticed that one of the windows in the front was broken.  The pungent smell of animal dung was in the air.  I g-gestured to the others to wait outside while I checked out the scene f-further.  As I opened the door, I noticed a deer resting on the k-k-kitchen table, surrounded by some rodents and birds.  To the right, the fire was l-lit and the c-c-cooking pot was steaming.  Animals couldn’t have done that.  Who was in our house?

Grumpy:

What gave Doc the right to tell us what to do?  I walked right in there with him.  It’s my house too, and I was going to go protect my stuff.  The first thing I noticed was that my cup had been used.  I left it in the cupboard where it belonged.  Whoever left my cup on the table, all used up and smother in their germs had something else coming to them.  That was my cup.  MY cup.  I don’t get a lot of time, space, or things to myself, and all I ask for is to have my own darn cup clean and in it’s place, and –

Fairy Godmother:

Excuse me, Grumpy?  Could you get back to the subject at hand, please?

Grumpy:

Yeah.  When I was washing my cup this low rumbly sound came from upstairs.  The other dwarves shuffled in behind me.  The sound came again, this time louder.  I glanced to the right and saw Doc staring back at me.  It was time to investigate further.

The stairs creaked too loud.  The bedroom reeked of shame and disrespect.  And do you know what I saw when I walked in there?  My bed was messed up!  Dirty footprints led right up to the my blanket half-strewn on the floor.  What a disgrace!

Fairy Godmother:

Thank you, Grumpy.  That’s enough.

Father (Leo):

My poor Charlotte!  She was so close with her mother.  When she died of the fever Charlotte was inconsolable for weeks.

Stepmother (Alice):

Charlotte’s mother died when she was very young.  I met her father about a year later while we were working at the mill and we married shortly after.

Charlotte didn’t take to me well.  It seemed she could never stop grieving over her mother’s death, which had started to take its toll on the whole family.  Neither of us could stay home and take care of her because we had to work.  Unfortunately, she was often left alone.

She really resented me for taking her father’s attention away from her.  She started to tell lies to make me look bad.  She said that I was a witch and I would cut her hair while she was sleeping to use in my spells.
About a week ago we found her sitting among shards of our broken mirror.  She ran out screaming about how I was going to poison her.  We didn’t hear from her until the police showed up….

  1. Ok I like the action, conflict & tension; but I’m not sure yet what the issue is–a messy bed? a used cup? seems not so important…so I don’t yet know what the issues will be in the story.

Will all the dwarves have conflicts with each other?

Will this be a SHREK-like modern adaptation of the fairy tale?

Who’s story is this? Grumpy? If so, why? What’s role of Fairy GM?

This scene does at least raise good questions.
