Sometimes I think to myself, how could I have already had a turning point in my life? I am only 21. Looking back onto what I have accomplished so far in life, I few things stand out. The one thing that I am going to focus on though is joining Alternative Breaks. It is something that began as a really small part of my life, a group I randomly decided to join. Joining Alternative Breaks has opened me up to a wide variety of people, connections, and issues. It has created a sense of passion towards non-profit and charity work in me.
I was very shy in high school having minimal social interaction, and I was not very involved. Alternative Breaks has helped me break out of my shell, put me out of my comfort zone and introduced me to many new people. Alternative Breaks has created life-long friends and roommates, which I never expected going into the organization. Now going into my third year of involvement in Alternative Breaks, it has been the best decision I’ve made in college.
Alternative Breaks introduced me to my three roommates, it helped me get a job at UMaine Student Life, and it has helped me make an impact in the community, which can never be measured. After being involved in Alternative Breaks, it has interested me in possible working in the non-profit field in the future, because it is so rewarding.
