Journal Tips/Research

One thing that I wanted to do a little research on was what the difference is between a Journal and a Diary. From what I found, a diary is a little less personal. This surprised me a bit, however it makes sense to me know that I think about it. A diary is a list of things that you’ve done in a day or what you plan doing in the next few days. While diaries can have some personal elements, it is sequential and as one person termed “A personal newspaper.” A journal has a little more “beef” to it. Journals don’t always go in a specific order.  They contain free writing/stories/hope dreams/more emotion. Unlike a diary, people tend to write journals whenever, not just at the end of the day.

A  tip that I found helpful would be leaving a few pages in the front of the journal blank to make an index of sorts after you fill it. This will be helpful when wanting to reference back to work that is randomly placed. This sort of replaces the tagging systems that people praise with digital copies. I tend to prefer written journals, but they tend to be messy and lack that order that digital version have.

A pro to using a digital journal is that sometimes digital journals are easier to write if you are disabled. People that have trouble with motor skills sometimes have an easier time typing using a typical keyboard or a modified keyboard.  Adaptive technology is extremely important to those who have trouble communicating and there are pushes to create apps that enable them to speak with peers/parents/etc.

  1. has your “written” journal been helpful in any way to developing story ideas or materials? I’m curious-you could easily take a low res photo of entries , if there were any you wanted to share.
